MANAGING DIGITAL PROJECTS: How to work from home and not go insane

2 mins read

Here we are again. Working from home is back and it's not the Christmas present we expected to receive this year — nor did we particularly want it. Does Boris accept returns? Luckily, we've been here before, so we know what we're facing. That's exactly what Amy from our RevOps team and Heather from our project management team chat about in our latest Managing Digital Projects podcast.

From having each other's back, talking about anything and everything in the company chat and the small wins that get you into the working mindset, they have all the tips you need to avoid the dreaded cabin fever. Press play below and take notes.

Communication is key

If there's something we can all agree on, it's that communication is essential to making WFH life easier. If you aren't in the office, it can be challenging to keep tabs on everything that's going on, so that's why it's on you and your teammates to keep each other in the loop.

Not sure where that task is up to? Drop a message. Struggling to get your head around something? Schedule a quick video call. Keeping that communication going is crucial to ensure everyone stays on the right track, particularly as the Christmas deadline is fast approaching.

Get in the office mindset

Sometimes it's the small wins like brushing your hair and swapping your pyjamas for an actual outfit. Don't panic, the slippers can stay — that can help you to get in the mindset to produce some of your best work.

It's way too easy to procrastinate at home, especially when you're surrounded by distractions like the dog, the postman and the wallpaper that you've just decided, right now, that you hate. Set yourself a schedule for the day and try to stick to it, making sure to mix things up so you don't get bogged down in one task.

But go easy on yourself. You don't have to be glued to your laptop screen. Give yourself a break. Let's face it, we'd probably be watching the latest FIFA match in the office anyway, and most importantly, set boundaries. When there's no differentiation between home and work, it can be all too easy to check your emails at 7pm, but it's vital for your mental headspace to resist the urge.

Support each other

At Digital 22, we're lucky to have the best team that always looks out for each other, right from the top. While the work from home announcement might not phase you that much, there may be others around you struggling with the news.

Check-in by dropping someone a message or schedule a morning brew with your team. Most importantly, lend a helping hand with tasks if your workload is light, but you can see that someone else is snowed under. We're all working towards the same goal, after all.

What else?

Remember that it's not all doom and gloom. Christmas is just around the corner. We've done this before and we're staying optimistic that we'll be back in the office in no time.

In the meantime, give our podcast a listen, feel the festive cheer and celebrate the good stuff during the upcoming break. If you fancy listening on the go, hit play on the SoundCloud player below.
